Some categories are excellent buys when reduced. Others are reduced precisely because nobody wanted them at full price, and buying those is how cupboards fill with textiles that never go on a bed.

Why Bedding Discounts So Heavily

Colours are seasonal, ranges are refreshed, and warehouse space for bulky goods is expensive. A quilt in last year’s shade costs the retailer money every week it sits there. That is a real reason for a real discount and it says nothing about the quality of the item, which is why sales in this category are worth paying attention to.

The Categories Worth Buying Reduced

Plain white and neutral pieces in classic weaves are the safest, because they do not date and you will use them regardless. Spare fitted sheets and pillowcases in sizes you already own are the next best. A discontinued colourway of a well-made quilt is a genuine opportunity if the construction is right, which is where checking the stitching on ranges such as Love’s Cabin tells you more than the percentage on the label.

What to Leave on the Shelf

Anything in a size you do not currently have a bed for. Anything strongly patterned that you would not have chosen at full price. Novelty seasonal items, which get used once. Bundled sets containing one thing you want and four you do not. And anything where the discount is calculated from a recommended price nobody ever charged.

The Sateen Trap

Sales are where the word satin does the most damage. Sateen is a weave structure, not a fibre, and it can be woven in cotton or in polyester. Cotton sateen is a fine, breathable fabric with a soft sheen. Polyester satin has the same shine and does not breathe at all, so it feels slick and warm and sticky by two in the morning. Check the fibre content, never the finish.

Checks to Run Before Adding to the Basket

Measure your mattress depth against the stated corner depth of any fitted sheet.

Confirm the fibre content, not just the weave name.

Check the care label for a wash temperature you can actually use.

Confirm the item fits your machine if it has a filling.

Ask whether you would buy this at full price, and be honest about the answer.

The Storage Cost Nobody Counts

Bedding is bulky. Three reduced quilts occupy an entire shelf of an airing cupboard for years, and that space has value in a small home. A bargain that lives in a bag under a bed until it is given away was not a bargain; it was a slow way of converting money into stored fabric.

The Sensible Approach

Decide what you need before the sale starts and write it down, in sizes. Then buy from that list and nothing else. This sounds joyless and it is the difference between coming out of a sale with a good quilt at a fair price and coming out with four items, one of which you will use.

Bedding goes on sale constantly, and the discounting is genuine often enough that people stop reading the product and start reading the price.
